RackSpace Acquires Slicehost and JungleDisk – to Compete with Amazon’s Cloud Computing Services

RackSpace, one of the world’s largest hosting providers which recently managed to accomplish and IPO, has acquired SliceHost – cloud computing and hosting provider with more than 15,000 users and JungleDisk – an online back up service with quiet a loyal user base. The acquisitions will most definitely see a shift in JungleDisk’s back end storage to RackSpace, which previously used to rely on Amazon S3.

In addition to the acquisitions, RackSpace has announced the release of Rackspace Cloud Hosting, a solution that combines CloudSites – a hosting platform and CloudFS – a cloud storage solution, with a  price tag that almost matches Amazon’s offerings.
